Since 1996 the 88 islands of the Bijagós archipelago (Guinea-Bissau), are protected under UNESCO’s Biosphere Reserve Programme. On February 1st 2024, Guinea-Bissau presented the application at UNESCO, of Bijagós Archipelago, for the World Heritage List.
